Neeraj noticed a clear pattern with his digestion. On normal days, his bowel movements were fairly regular and comfortable. But during periods of stress when he had work deadlines, important meetings, travel, or family pressure, his gut would suddenly become unpredictable. Mornings before meetings were especially difficult. He would experience loose stools, urgency, and a constant fear of needing the washroom again. Doctors reassured him that it was IBS or anxiety-related and advised him not to worry. While the reassurance helped mentally, the symptoms kept returning whenever stress resurfaced.
The breaking point came when he realized he was planning his travel, meetings, and daily schedule around his gut. Even when he felt mentally calm, his digestion reacted faster than his thoughts.
There was no structural gut disease or infection. His symptoms were driven by an overactive gut–brain axis. Stress was triggering exaggerated gut motility through the nervous system, causing rapid bowel movements without adequate digestion. Over time, this pattern became conditioned, meaning even anticipation of stress was enough to trigger symptoms.
This was not a gut disease that needed suppression. The gut was responding appropriately to perceived threat, the problem was that the threat response was always switched on. Healing required retraining the nervous system and restoring gut–brain balance.
Regular meal timings, calm eating environment, pre-meal breathing, light movement after meals, daily nervous system regulation practices, reduced multitasking during meals, and consistent sleep schedule.
Urgency episodes reduced. Morning bowel movements became less frantic.
Able to attend meetings and travel short distances without fear of urgency.
Stress no longer triggered loose stools. Digestion felt stable even during busy periods.
Neeraj reports stable digestion even during stressful work phases. Occasional nervousness no longer translates into gut symptoms. He feels confident traveling, attending meetings, and managing pressure without fear of losing digestive control.
“I would get diarrhea everytime I got anxious, it was a really bad feeling because it would create a lot of trouble for me in my daily life. Doctors told me it was stress and that I should learn how to manage it. But they didnt tell me how to do that, except for anti-anxiety pills that they gave me. After talking to the doctors at Thavira, they made me realize it is not just the mental side of stress, but the physical side of it as well. And they helped me form a complete routine and guided meditations and everything to help me calm down my gut and mind. With their help I was able to slowly maintain my stress levels and now while my life situation has not changed much - i believe im a quite resilient to the problems of my life.”
