Her Story

The Struggle

Meera was getting a reaction from anything that she ate. She was suffering from multiple food allergies leading to constant worry about what will trigger her gut and what will not. Doctors chalked it out to increased response and suggested she try steroids and anti-inflammatory drugs. She felt the urge to go to the washroom after eating anything and this was causing her to be stressed about eating outside. And this whole ordeal was increasing her anxiety and overall stress on the body - creating a vicious cycle of inflammation and stress..

Daily Symptoms

  • She was experiencing severe bloating and oftentimes, flatulence. She would feel the urge to go to the washroom right after eating food.
  • She also had insensitivities to plenty of foods like dairy, gluten, eggs, seafoods, and many more.
  • She was getting frequent headaches and weakness after evenings. This was leading in lack of motivation and also increase in anxiety.

The Breaking Point

After years of cutting foods without clarity and still feeling unwell, Meera realized restriction alone was not going to help her. She needed to actually figure out and address the problem that is causing her gut to be inflamed..

Our Assessment

What We Discovered

Her IBS was driven by high gut sensitivity, gut microbial imbalance, stress-induced hypermotility. There was a lack of planning when it came to diet and that resulted in a disturbed diet cycle which aggravated her condition even more

Root Causes Identified

  • Anxiety leading to increased cortisol levels in the body. Perhaps even difficult life experiences were leading to persistent stress responses from the body.
  • This was causing increased motility in the gut. Chronic inflammation was leading to poor nutrient absorption and causing imbalance in the gut microbiome.

Doctor's Analysis

Without first calming gut irritation and then systematically rebuilding tolerance, IBS patients remain trapped in restriction. Healing required control, repair, and confident reintroduction.

Treatment Protocol

Phase 1: Low FODMAP Diet

  • We kept her on a low FODMAP diet which removed all fermentable foods from her diet. This helped in controlling the amount of triggers in her foods.
  • Secondly we introduced some simple stress relieving techniques to centre her nervous system along with some supplements to calm her gut and mind.

Phase 2: IBS Reversal & Gut Repair (Weeks 5-8)

  • Now that the gut was stabilized and symptoms were fairly under control, we started introducing functional medicine aspects to start healing the inflammation and dysbiosis.
  • Paired with stress reduction and lifestyle balancing the whole aim was to bring about complete stability.

Phase 3: Stabilization

  • The gut felt under her control after a long while and she could eat and experiment with a few foods that irritated her earlier. She was now comfortable with eating eggs and fish. Her tolerance for gluten was still persistent.
  • We introduced gut microbial restoration through potent and targeted probiotics and started her on a reintroduction diet where we tested the strength of her gut tolerance.

Daily Routine

Low FODMAP meals in Phase 1, gut-healing support in Phase 2, structured food reintroduction in Phase 3, mindful eating, breathwork before meals, yoga for digestion, and stress-aware routines.

In Her Own Words

“I was afraid I would have to live like this for my whole life. Worrying about what to eat and what to avoid. I couldnt eat so many of my favourite foods because they were starting to irritate the gut. But I was surprised that when Thavira designed my diet, I could actually eat everything that they had suggested. Not just that I was actually feeling calmer in my gut. I finally felt like my diet and my gut was in my control after so long. Thanks to Thavira team for their constant support.”
