Karthik was initially prescribed PPIs for occasional acidity. Over the years, the medication became a daily habit. Gradually, his digestion weakened. Meals began causing severe bloating, foul-smelling gas, and heaviness that would last for hours. He started reacting to foods he had eaten comfortably all his life. Despite increasing medications, his symptoms worsened. Social outings became stressful because of bloating and gas.
When even light meals and water caused bloating and discomfort, he realized something deeper was wrong. Increasing medications was clearly making things worse.
Functional assessment revealed hypochlorhydria caused by prolonged PPI use, leading to bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine (SIBO). Weak stomach acid had allowed bacteria to migrate upward, ferment food, and produce gas.
Suppressing acid had created the disease. Healing required restoring stomach acid, clearing bacterial overgrowth, and rebuilding digestive strength.
Fixed meals, mindful chewing, digestive support before meals, short walks post meals, no late-night eating, consistent sleep.
Bloating intensity reduced. Gas frequency decreased.
Meals tolerated better. Brain fog reduced.
Eating normally without bloating or gas.
Karthik remains symptom-free and no longer depends on acid suppressing medications.
“I had no idea that PPI could be the cause for my diseases. I was taking them daily and even my doctor didn't tell me to stop them. He told me to manage the dose and gave me different pills but never was I told to find other ways to manage it. When I consulted with Thavira, they told me that the problem is with the PPI itself and that we need to start tapering it. I was really surprised because that is what was making me feel betterβ¦ But over time, I trusted them with their diet and protocol. And now I am really glad I did, because I have reduced my PPI dose to only occasionally if needed, and I can eat almost all the food I used to earlier. So great thanks to the team.”
